The elevator in Sandton City Tower hums with the frequency of my heartbeat, forty-three floors of steel and ambition rising through Johannesburg’s gold-dusted sky. Through the glass walls, the city spreads like a circuit board, all gleaming towers and hidden current. I shouldn’t be here. The merger documents in my briefcase feel heavier than lead.
Thabo waits in the conference room, his smile cutting through the antiseptic air like sunlight through smog. We’ve been meeting like this for months—stolen moments between hostile takeovers, our firms locked in corporate warfare while we find excuses to brush fingers over contract signatures.
“The Ndebele patterns are spreading again,” I whisper, watching geometric designs bloom across the mahogany table’s surface like digital flowers. The traditional motifs have been appearing throughout the building for weeks, crawling up elevator shafts and spiraling across boardroom windows. Security calls it vandalism. I know better.
His eyes flicker—not surprise, but something sharper. “Are they?”
The patterns pulse brighter, responding to his voice. My chest tightens as understanding crystallizes like frost on glass. “You’re making them appear.”
Thabo’s corporate mask finally slips. “My grandmother’s stories. She said this place was built on sacred ground, that the ancestors would reclaim it eventually.” His fingers trace the air, and golden fractals spiral across the window behind him. “I never believed until I met you.”
“The board will shut down both firms if they discover—”
“Let them.” The patterns now cover every surface, transforming the sterile boardroom into something ancient and alive. “Some things are worth more than quarterly reports.”
Outside, Sandton’s towers gleam cold and untouchable, but here the walls pulse with warmth, with memory, with the dangerous mathematics of a love that refuses to calculate its costs.
